C Se Comedy: Building Ahmedabad’s Stand-Up Scene

In a city where the arts have flourished in poetry, storytelling, and theatre, stand-up comedy was once an underrepresented scene. But City Based Stand-up Comics Tulsi K. Gajjar and Suri Solanki decided to change that. With a shared love for comedy and a lack of dedicated spaces for stand-up, they founded C Se Comedy, a platform that has since become a nurturing ground for comedians in Ahmedabad.

A Comedy Room Born from Necessity

The journey of C Se Comedy began with a simple yet powerful idea, creating a space for comedians to test, refine, and perfect their material. “A couple of years ago, Ahmedabad didn’t have enough platforms for stand-up. We needed a room where we could perform, try new jokes, and improve our craft,” says Tulsi K. Gajjar.

The challenge, however, wasn’t just about starting a comedy club, it was about finding the right venue. The duo scoured the city, looking for a spot where comedy could thrive without distractions. That search led them to Sip of Hope – The Coffee House, a cozy venue that soon became Ahmedabad’s go-to place for stand-up.

Building a Community, Not Just a Club

C Se Comedy is more than just a stage; it’s a community-driven initiative where comedians grow together. While they aren’t formally mentoring yet, Tulsi and Suri ensure that every comedian gets enough stage time. Newcomers can test their jokes at open mics, and once they gain confidence, they move on to curated lineup shows.

“We believe a city’s comedy scene is built by giving comedians enough opportunities to nurture their art,” says Tulsi. And that belief is starting to pay off. Comedians who began their journey with C Se Comedy, including Hitesh Patel and Neelay Udani, have grown significantly. Even Kushal Bhanushali, who won hearts on India’s Got Talent, was a regular at C Se Comedy before gaining national recognition.

From Free Shows to Sold-Out Performances

Comedy is as much about the audience as it is about the performer. When we first started, selling tickets was a challenge. “People weren’t ready to pay for local stand-up shows. We had to invite them to free performances just to build interest,” Tulsi recalls.

But the team was determined to change the perception. They never encouraged free shows, ensuring that comedians and the art form were valued. The approach worked. Slowly, the audience started showing up, and today, tickets sell in advance. The primary crowd ranges from 19 to 30-year-olds, but the reach is expanding, with people from across India attending their shows.

The Future of C Se Comedy

Despite their growth, C Se Comedy remains true to its core mission, creating a space for stand-up comedy to flourish in Ahmedabad. There are no grand expansion plans, no rush to commercialize. The focus remains on crafting great jokes and providing a stage where comics can perform without restrictions.

With a thriving community, rising stars, and a growing audience, C Se Comedy is slowly but surely making Ahmedabad a comedy hub. And as long as there’s laughter in the air, Tulsi and Suri know they’re on the right path.
